Gallup & Guns: The Obama Effect

By Rusty Shackleford | October 21, 2009

Bottom Line

President Obama has never said, either on the campaign trail or after taking office, that he intends to push for a ban on the sale of all guns. Nevertheless, the reports of increased sales of guns and ammunition suggest that certain segments of society — in particular, gun owners — are acting as if this belief is true. The data reviewed here show that at least a majority of those who own guns or have guns in the household indeed do believe that Obama will attempt to ban the sale of all guns. It is not possible to establish that this belief has led directly to increased gun- or ammunition-purchasing behavior. But the possibility of such a connection appears quite real.

A little more on the current administration and the uptick in the sale of firearms and ammunition…

‘The Obama effect’
Americans usually buy about 7 billion rounds of ammunition a year, according to the National Rifle Association. In the past year, that figure has jumped to about 9 billion rounds, said NRA spokeswoman Vickie Cieplak.

Jason Gregory, who manages Gretna Gun Works just outside of New Orleans, has been building his personal supply of ammunition for months. His goal is to have at least 1,000 rounds for each of his 25 weapons.

“I call it the Obama effect,” said Gregory, 37, of Terrytown, La. “It always happens when the Democrats get in office. It happened with Clinton and Obama is even stronger for gun control. Ammunition will be the first step, so I’m stocking up while I can.”

So far, the new administration nor Congress has not been markedly antigun. Obama has said he respects Second Amendment rights, but favors “common sense” on gun laws. Still, worries about what could happen persist.

“Common sense” gun laws? As opposed to the thousands of guns laws already on the books?!

It’s nice to see that Obama “respects” The Bill of Rights, so we’ve got that goin’ for us!

IMO, I think the Left has smartened up and come to the realization that the 2nd Amendment isn’t going away, and with that, they’ll just “ban” guns in a round-about sorta way by going after ammunition.  They’ll either place heavy restrictions on the manufacturing and sale (California) OR they’ll tax it all to hell making it impossible to afford, it’s already sitting at 11%, what’s a few more points?!

That is all.
