Recovery and Reinvestment: Bozeman-style

By Rusty Shackleford | September 26, 2009

A large excavation project under way adjacent to the East Main interchange of Interstate 90 has had people scratching their heads recently.

But the piles of dirt are not being moved to make way for the next bank or convenience stop.

According to Tom McCormick with the Montana Department of Transportation, the project involves wetland mitigation.

“MDT works with the Montana Interagency Wetlands Group to avoid, minimize or mitigate damage to wetlands that might result from highway construction,” according to nt.water.usgs.gov.

In instances where MDT projects destroy wetlands completely, the department creates new ones elsewhere to compensate.

“The big thing is to make wetland habitat for geese and ducks and bugs and whatever else comes through,” McCormick said.

Am I the only one getting tired of press not doing their jobs now-a-days? I can’t tell if they’re lazy or just incompetent.

From recovery.mt.gov:

This site is to allow all Montanans to follow how we are reinvesting and rebuilding Montana with funding from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. An estimated 11,000 jobs will be created or saved and the majority of Montanans will see tax relief.

Neato.

Check out the Governor’s monthly report for July, scroll down to page 176 and you’ll see that $232,865 is being spent on the Bozeman mitigation project in order to Recover and Reinvest in America, or something. The estimated start date for the project, according to the report, is Jul_09 with it’s expected completion being Oct_09… Wow!  Jobs were created for the span of 4 whole months!  And if it weren’t for the super-kewl sign posted, I probably never would have found out what the project was, and how much money was being pissed away on it.

A quarter million of our tax dollars are being spent for a bird reststop!!  AWESOME!

That is all.
