Cap & Trade/Tax: $175 OR $3000…WHO YA GOT?!

By Rusty Shackleford | July 1, 2009

“Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.”

The left has been quoting a CBO study which toutes a “modest” increase of $175 a year in the cost of energy consumption. Doing a quick calculation, that translates into a $14.58 per month increase for a household of four…how does that jive with eventual “skyrocket”-ing of rates that Obama threatened?  Let’s see…

Well… the CBO is basing their figures on impacts to the economy that will happen in the near future- up to 2020, the lowest cost increases happening now.   They don’t tell you what happens as the water reaches boiling point.

The Heritage Foundation, on the other hand, goes out much further- from 2012 to 2035- and illustrates the much larger impact that the Cap and Tax bill will have over time.  Of course, CBO’s estimates could be debated, and are not based on concrete sectors in the economy nor do I have any confidence in the Feds to accurately account for all factors and consequences of their meddling.

For argument’s sake, let’s assume that the $175 increase for a family of four is correct…what about the costs associated with the other aspects of this typical family’s life? Energy they consume within their own four walls is one thing, but what about energy costs related to day-to-day existence?  A few examples…

**The cost of electricity consumed at the places of employment of Mom & Dad, resulting in higher costs for the employer and lower wages.

**The continued economic downturn as costs for gasoline and resource production goes higher and wages get lower.

**The cost associated with the electricity consumed where little Suzy and Johnny go to school, driving property taxes up.

Check out The Heritage Foundation for some figures that will make your eyes bleed.

I understand why the Left would low-ball the figures on this issue…they really want it to pass.  But with the passage of time, the actual cost will finally be felt by the American people and it’ll be too late to turn back.  A productive society’s waaaay overrated anyway…awesome!

That is all.
