There’s no room for error in Montana. And we knew the weight of the world was on us in Montana…and so, we were prepared. And the advantage is, ya know, when you got a Governor of a state on your side WHOA! You can turn some dials, and we did. *laughter* For example, 7% of the population are Indian. 7% of the folks in MT have lived there for 10,000 years and beyond. 400 generations of history in MT…and when they vote, they vote for Democrats. So we wanted to make sure they voted, we did all of our homework and we made sure they were all registered to vote we made sure they showed up on election day, and we anticipated some of the shenanigans from the ?*smoothies*? back east *laughter* So I called the party chairs two weeks in advance and I said to them, “There’s libel to be some sons of bitches *laughter* like that, maybe something or another *laughter* they’re gonna show up and they’re gonna stand out front of the polling place and they’re gonna ask people if they’ve got proof that they’ve paid their electric bill and they’re gonna tell them that, uh, if you go in and vote and you’ve got any kind of a warrant out for you, if you’re not exactly sure whether you’ve got your drivers license completely legal. And so, we didn’t want any of that bologna goin’ on so at 8:30 at every polling place on every tribal nation in MT, there sure enough, were guys with brand new Carhartt jackets standing out there with smoothed up kinda shoes that came from somewhere else, they weren’t boots, there was no cow shit on them *laughter* and they were the only white guys within 50 miles around there *laughter* And they started in on their bologna, and in every case, the tribal police showed up. Lights goin’ siren on, they walked right up to ‘em and asked ‘em for some identification. *laughter* They reached in their pocket, showed them their drivers license showin’ that they come from Rhode Island or Texas or some damn place, and then they said to ‘em, “um, people matching your description *laughter* have been reported as having stolen a pick-up about 30 miles…*laughter* *applause* we only have on jail here and we don’t have a phone here and we already got 11 people in it *mumbled* sometimes it takes 2 or 3 days to work these things out. So either come with us in the backseat of our car or you can both get in the front seat of your car and we’ll lead you off this reservation, and if we never see you again, you won’t go to jail.” We didn’t lose one single vote in there. *applause*

I told you I was confindent we were gonna win this election, and I told you it was gonna be pretty easy if you wrote a check. It wasn’t that easy, and I wasn’t that confident, and it took a little extra work.

Tell ya how this thing worked:

We start out early and John Tester’s ahead by about 8-9 points with all the cities are comin’ in early and about 11 o’clock, midnight he’s up by 1 point, and then it’s 2, 3 o’clock in the morning and it’s up or down just a little bit and votes are still comin’ in and now it’s 3:30 in the morning and there’s only 3 places where votes aren’t in and so I said, “What’s out there?”. Well, there’s only 3 precincts left in Billings, so I did the calculation real quick and that meant he could lose that by half a percent or something like that ?he was about pushing in all the other precints? (PUSH AS IN A TIE?—RS) and there was Meagher County, well, bad news is that almost everybody in Meagher Coutny is gonna vote against him, good news is there’s only 491 votes in Meagher Country, so we wrote that one off, and then I said, “Where else?” And I swear to God, I made the sign of the cross, said a little prayer, and they said, “well, it’s Butte Silver-Bow, they still have 7 precincts out.” Well, for those of you who don’t know the history of Butte, that’s the birthplace of the American labor movement, that’s a mining city, that’s a place where everybody’s a Democrat. *audio breaks* I knew we had, I knew…we could feel it. So I called up the courthouse in Silver-Bow and I talked to the clerk and you could image, Governor’s on the phone, the whole world’s waitin’ for your votes to come in…so she gets to the phone, she’s outta breath, she sound nervous as a pregnant nun *laughter* and she starts sayin’ “Brian, we’re gonna have this in. I need 15 minutes.” I said “No, no, don’t’ worry about it, don’t’ worry about it. I’ll tell you what, I’ll call you back when you’re done.” And she say’s “no, I’m sure we can be done in the next 15 minutes.” And I said, “I want you to listen, I want you to listen close. I’ll. Call. You. When you’re done countin’! Now do you understand it?”*laughter* And she’s from Butte, she understood exactly *laughter* We counted up the rest of the votes that we had out there, and I tell ya, I knew we had won, but I didn’t want the press to say, “it’s so close in MT that we’re gonna have to have a recount” because 48 out of 56 counties in MT are run 100% by the Republican Party. So when ever any body says “ you think it’s tied, we gotta do a recount, we got this we got that” We were sunk, we were gonna have another Florida or some other 3rd World Country *laughter* So, waited, waited and we released it right at a quarter to 8 and then I called the Associated Press and he’s up by 21, 22 hundred votes, I called the Assocated Press and I said, “All right, it’s time for you to call the race, I’ve done the math, everything’s in, there’s nothin’ else to count. Ya ask me, ya ask me what’s gonna be important this election they didn’t want to get wrong cuz they knew the whole world was watchin’ and they said “Aww geez, we can’t call it…this…recount…percent..I don’t knwo” And I said to ‘em “Look, let me tell ya somethin’, if you’re not willing to do your job, I’ll do it for ya. I just called a press conference and you’re invited at 10 o’clock this morning and I’m gonna stand next to the next United States Senator and I’m gonna introduce him to the world cuz you’re not doin’ your job.” “Alright” So, we called a press conference. We had tv cameras there, we had all the press there and at 2 minutes, 2 minutes before the press conference everybody’s blackberry started buzzing…the Associated Press in MT has just called the race for John Tester *applause*

Sorry if there are a few punctuation errors…I’m not a transcriber by trade, so no complaining.

In summation: Think for yourself. Either you agree with what the man said/did or you don’t. It’s as simple as that. You can hear him in his own words…you can draw your own conclusions. As the adage goes, “People see what they want to see”. You either agree with his methods or you don’t. That’s it.

[…] This summer, Gov. Brian Schweitzer boasted to a room full of trial lawyers that he had “turn[ed] some dials” to make sure that John Tester’s election to the U.S. Senate went off without a hitch.  These dials included threatening people with jail time and encouraging an election official in Butte to stall the release of Silver Bow County’s results to thwart a possible recount.  (MT Pundit has the transcript of the audio and a link to the clip itself.) I think this is hilarious. You righties just can’t stand it when we use some of your tactics on you, can you? The only problem is we’re not doing it enough!!!

P.S. How is it ‘tampering’ when someone tries to put an end to the voter intimidation tactics used by the Rethuglicans?????

    Wait, I’m confused.

These people were brought in from out of state and paid to hang around polling places with the express purpose of intimidating registered voters into going home without voitng, right? Isn’t that illegal?

We’re supposed to be upset because the cops threatened these people with jail time for breaking the law?

    I’m sorry, I just don’t see it.

I’ll admit that delaying the release of vote counts from Silver Bow is manipulation. But, as the goal was to get the AP to simply report the numbers instead of calling for a recount, isn’t that manipulation of the press, not of the electoral process itself?

I see some hardball politics here, whether real or just “as a joke,” but I don’t see anything undemocratic, or anything that endangers the Republic.

There are plenty of real problems on both sides of the aisle, why can’t we worry about those, instead?
